Reuuben Craig - Class Of 1911

Reuben Arthur Craig, M.D., 75, Kokomo pediatrician and one of the prominent figures in the community’s medical profession, died unexpectedly at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at his home, 4105 W. Sycamore Street, Kokomo. He had been afflicted with a heart ailment for several years, but had continued practicing on a limited scale until two months ago. He had attended a dinner Monday night at the St. Joseph Memorial Hospital there. Dr. Craig was Kokomo’s first pediatrician and one of the first in Indiana. He specialized in children's diseases. He was born Jan.7, 1892. in Carroll County, the son of Eli and Della Ferguson Craig who moved to Madison Township in 1910. His marriage Dec.8, 1917, was to India Hurley of Clay Township. He attended both Flora and Delphi High Schools and was graduated in 1911 from Delphi High School where he was captain of the first basketball team. After graduating from Franklin College and the University of Louisville Medical School, he began practicing in 1923. He also had taught school in Madison Township, Camden and Delphi and had coached at Camden and Delphi. Sports were another of his hobbies. After playing baseball and football in college, he played semi-pro baseball with a Kokomo team. During World War I he was an artillery officer and in World War II he held a commission in the Medical Corps of the Indiana National Guard. An avid fisherman and hunter, he was the founder of the Kokomo Chapter of the Izaak Walton League. He was a breeder of Guernsey cattle and his interest in livestock led him to be a member of numerous cattle breeders organizations. The Boy Scout movement was another of his chief interest. He was one of a group of citizens which helped establish Camp Crossland, the Boy Scout summer camp. In his profession. he served several times as president of the Howard County Medical Society, was the first president of the Howard Community Hospital staff and a past president of the medical staff at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital, both in Kokomo. He was a member of the Main Street Methodist Church, the Kokomo Rotary Club, the Masonic lodge, Scottish Rite, American Legion and Sigma Alpha Epsilon, social fraternity. Surviving with the widow are a son Dr. Reuben Allen Craig of Kokomo, who was associated with his father there in the practice of pediatrics; four grandchildren; and two brothers, Leo C. Craig of Delphi, and Russell Craig of Rt. 2, Delphi. The body is at the Fenn Funeral Home, S. Union St. Kokomo, where Wednesday calling hours were from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be today, Thursday, at 2 p.m. at the Main Street Methodist Church, with the Rev. Charles Elson officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Memory Gardens, south of Kokomo.
