William Harley - Class Of 1912

William Ranney Harley, 52, member of a prominent Delphi family and well known throughout newspaper circles in many states, was found dead in bed at his Toledo, Ohio, apartment at noon Tuesday. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Mr. Harley, who was chief editorial writer for the Toledo Times failed to report for work Tuesday morning and business associates found his body. Born in Delphi in January, 1895, he was the son of Charles and Mary (Ranney) Harley. He graduated from the Delphi high school and Wabash college in 1916. After attending Wabash he entered Harvard for one year and then served in World War I. Returning to Delphi, he was employed at the Delphi Journal for about 8 months and then took employment with the Kokomo Tribune. His rise in newspaper work was rapid and he became associated with such news papers as the Indianapolis News, Boston Herald, Philadelphia Ledger, and the Los Angeles Times. He also taught Journalism at Carlton College, Northfield, Minnesota, and at the University of Kansas, Lawrence Kansas. Mr. Harley became chief of the editorial department of the Toledo Times in January of this year. He was a member of the local Masonic order; the American Legion and the Presbyterian Church. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Luther McCain of Delphi, and Mrs. Grace Colladay of Philadelphia. Funeral rites will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 p. m. from the Patrick Mortuary in Delphi with the Rev. Miles Allen Freeman officiating. Burial will be in the I. O. O. F. cemetery.
