Burton Honan - Class Of 1912

 

  Burton Honan, 80, of Riley Road, Delphi, died at 6:25 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette, where he had been a patient over four weeks.

  Mr. Honan was born on the family farm in Madison Twp., March 21, 1894, the son of Daniel and Margaret Conway Honan.  After graduation from Delphi High School in 1912, he attended Marion Normal School and taught rural school in Madison and Democrat Twps.  He later assumed responsibility of the farm.

  He was married June 10, 1942 in Pontiac, Ill., to Helen Winslow who survives.

  He helped organize Carroll County Farm Bureau and in 1919 became its second president.  In 1922 he became the youngest director of the State Farm Bureau and served four years.  He became involved in farm programs during the depression years and served as Carroll County director of the corn-hog program in 1934 and supervisor of the program for the northern half of the state in 1935.

  He served as farmer fieldman of the Agricultural Adjustment Administration until his resignation in 1949 to devote full time to farming.  In 1952 he retired from farming.  An appointee of Governor Roger Branigan, he served on the Indiana Livestock Sanitary Board from 1968 to 1972.

  Mr. Honan was director of the Delphi Bank before it became the Union Bank and Trust Co. and served as a director from 1938 to 1966.  From 1947 to 1966 he was vice president, and during this time the new bank building was built.

  Mr. Honan was a lifelong Democrat.  In 1952 he served as state chairman of the Farmers for Stevenson and was treasurer of the senatorial campaign of Claude Wickard, a life-long friend.

  Public service was a major part of his lifework.

  In the 1950's he was Carroll County chairman of fund raising for St. Elizabeth Hospital and co-chairman with John Peterson of the Carroll County drive for Health, Inc. which benefited St. Elizabeth and Home Hospitals.  He served briefy on the advisory board for the Rossville Nursing Home.  He contributed generously to all of these drives.

  He was a member of the local chapter of Knights of Columbus for over 50 years and served in various offices in the organization.  He also was a member of the Pulaski Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus at Logansport for 34 years.

  Sensitive to the needs of his parish, Mr. Honan donated money for the erection of a parish hall which was named Honan Hall by the congregation.  It has proved valuable to the parish as well as the community.

  In 1968 the American Legion selected Mr. Honan for the Citizen of the Year Award.

  Surviving with the wife is one brother, Harold of Delphi.  Three sisters and one brother preceded him in death.

  Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Ambrose Ziegler officiating.  Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Delphi.  Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday at Lloyd Funeral Home.  Delphi Knights of Columbus services are at 8 p.m. followed by the Rosary.

  In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to the Carroll County Heart Association or St. Elizabeth Hospital Building Fund.
