Lawrence Merrell - Class Of 1916

Lawrence Merrell, 52, a veteran of World War I, died at 5 a.m. Saturday at the St. Elisabeth hospital following a heart attack suffered on May 16, while plowing a garden. Born at Delphi, October 26, 1894, he was the son of John M. and Christiana (Hager) Merrell. He served in the medical corps of the U.S. army for 18 months during World War I. His first wife, Grace Beard, passed away in 1936. In 1937 he was married to Josephine Wray, who survives. He also leaves four children by his first wife: John M, Delphi; Mrs. Frances Walker, Thorntown; Larry Joe, Rosemary, and Robert by his second marriage, Two sisters, Mrs. Omar Smith and Mrs. John Ratcliff, Delphi, and four step-sons Bernard, Gerald, Richard and Delbert Wray, all of Delphi. Funeral rites were held Tuesday afternoon at the Patrick Mortuary. Rev. Paul Anderson of St. Joseph's church officiated. Burial was made in the St. Joseph cemetery. The Harry Bohannon Post was In charge of military rites.
