Clarence Engle - Class Of 1916

Clarence O. Engle, 52, well known Monticello merchant and formerly a prominent resident of Delphi, died Tuesday evening at his home following an illness of more than 2 years. Born in Terre Haute May 31, 1897, he was the son of James and Hattie Engle. He moved to Delphi with his parents when he was nine years old and graduated from the Delphi high school in 1916. He was a clerk in the Model Clothing Company here and entered Naval service in November, 1918. On September 16, 1918 he was married to Freda Browne of Delphi. After his return from service, he became associated with his father in the Studebaker automobile business here and resided in Delphi until 1926 when his father purchased the Main Garage in Monticello. He later became the agent for the Texas Oil Company in Monticello and was engaged in that business at the time of his death. A member of the Presbyterian church, he was also active in the Delphi Masonic lodge, Tippecanoe Country Club, American Legion, Good Fellows club and the Monticello Luncheon club. Surviving with the widow is one son, Joseph B. of Monticello; a granddaughter; his mother, Mrs. Hattie Engle of Monticello; two brothers, A. L., of Fowler and Russell of Gary. The body is at the family residence, 608 West Washington, Monticello, where friends may call. It will be taken to the Monticello Presbyterian church at noon Friday where funeral services will be conducted at 2 p. m. Friday with the Rev. H. E. Dirks officiating. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery, Monticello.
