Bernarldine Surface - Class Of 1909

Blood poisoning in the most acute form caused the death of Miss Bernaldine Surface of Rockfield, a member of the sophomore class at Purdue University, at the home of her sister, Mrs. Arrell Goez, at Lafayette about noon last Friday. The funeral services were held in that city fron; the home of the sister, last Sunday afternoon. Interment was made in the Springvale cemetery. Out of respect some sixty friends chartered an interurban car from Rockfield and attended the funeral in a body. Although death was caused by blood poisoning the doctors have not yet decided just what caused the affliction. The young woman was working in the biological laboratory at the university on Friday previous to her death and was examining some forms of plant life. She had a small needle with which she had been making the examination and without thinking of any serious consequences used the needle to open a small pimple on her forehead. That evening she went to the home of her sister and on Saturday became ill. Doctors were called and although they used every possible means of checking the progress of the septic poisoning they were, unsuccessful. Medicine seemed to have no effect whatever on the action of the poison. Physicians are making a careful examination of the needle in the hope of finding out what form of malignant poison caused the infection. Bernaldine Surface, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Surface, was born in Lafayette 21 years ago. and for the past 15 or 16 years had resided at Rockfield. She graduated from the public schools there and then entered the Delphi high school, from which she received her diploma in 1909. For five years she taught school in Rock Creek and Washington townships. She was very successful and was well liked. Besides her parents she is survived by two brothers. Judd, who lives in North Dakota, and James, of Chicago.
