Charles Cartwright - Class Of 1897

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the residence on West Front street for Charles A. Cartwright, 64, who died suddenly last Thursday morning of a heart attack. Mr. Cartwright had been in ill health for the past year. The son of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Cartwright, he was born in Delphi and spent his entire life in this community where he was a beloved friend of many and a respected citizen of the town. He was active in the social and civic affairs of the community and at one time served as president of Delphi Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the city council. He had been president of the Benton County Telephone Association; was a member of the Delphi country club, the Junto Club and the Delphi Methodist church. Mr. Cartwright was a graduate of the Delphi high school. Rev. Roy Sturm, pastor of the Methodist church, officiated at the services. Flower bearers were Mrs. Ralph Melin, Mrs. L. H. Smith, Mrs. H. B. Wilson. Mrs. Robert VanNatta, Mrs. Wilbur Lane, Mrs. Will Smock, Mrs. Lula Robbins. Mrs. Margaret Gerard, Mrs. Julia Schilling. Mrs. Paul Carney, Mrs. Fred Martin, Mrs. Thomas Dial of Indianapolis, Mrs. Roy Clauser, Mrs. Curtis McCain, Mrs. Byram Crosby and Miss Ruth Carney. Pallbearers were Robert Wood, Charles Wood, John Wood of South Bend, John Shigley of Fort Wayne, Millard McConnell of Lafayette, and Ensign John Earl Walker, all nephews of Mr. Cartwright; and O. S. Keim and Sherman Fife. Those from out-of-town attending the funeral services were Leonard Smith, H. W. Hogue, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Dial and Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Mathews, all of Indianapolis; Mr. and Mrs. John Wood of South Bend, Joe Thompson and Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Hunt of Logansport; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Grimm of Winona, Minnesota; Carl W. Snyder and John Shigley of Fort Wayne; W. J. Walters of Battle Ground, Dr. and Mrs. W. S. Walters, Mrs. Guy Thomas and Miss Kathryn Thomas and Millard McConnell, all of Lafayette; R. D. Pontius of Rochester, L H. Finney of Williamsport, W. L. Bott of Rensselaer, N. N. Bott of Remington, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Shigley and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Judy of Monticello, Ensign John Earl Walker of Annapolis, Md., and Mrs. Mae Walker Perry of St. Petersburg, Florida. Burial was made in the Masonic cemetery with Grimm and Sons in charge of arrangements.
