Roscoe Dillen - Class Of 1898

Captain Roscoe F. Dillen, 65, of Washington, D. C., and a native of this county, died of a heart attack suffered Monday night at the Billy Martin, home, east of Camden. Captain Dillen had been visiting his mother, Mrs. Henrietta Dillen of Camden. Born at Camden on March 16, 1881, he was the son of Ross and Henrietta (Armstrong) Dillen. He enlisted in the Navy when he was 18 years old; and was later selected to attend the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. Following his graduation from the academy, he spent most of his time in the Asiatic waters and in China, retiring in 1939 after 40 years of service. He was Recalled to active duty in 1940 and, was stationed in the Panama: Canal Zone. Surviving with his mother are his wife, Elizabeth of Washington; a son, Goodwin A. Dillen of New York City; two grandchildren. One son, Roscoe Dillen, jr., was lost on the submarine Shark in the Java sea in 1942. The body was taken to the Baker funeral home in Camden where it remained until final arrangements were made to have it removed to Washington for funeral rites and burial.
