Larry McAfee - Class Of 1901

Obit. Brig. General Larry B. McAfee, U. S. Army (retired), and a Delphi native, died Saturday morning at 3 a. m. at Fitzsimmons General Hospital, Denver, following a brief illness. General McAfee, who had not been well since early spring when he suffered from a virus infection, arose Friday morning and remarked to his sister, Miss Jessie McAfee that he felt fine. At noon he was seized with severe stomach pains and was rushed to Fitzsimmons and his son, Dr. George McAfee of Cincinnati was notified. Death came at 3 a. m. before Dr. George could arrive by plane. Born in Delphi in June, 1884, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Delano McAfee, prominent residents of the community. The family at that time lived in the house now occupied by Bill Politz on East Monroe. Following graduation from the local high school in 1901, General McAfee was employed by the old Burr and Brewer shoe store in Delphi Later the late Congressman C. B. Landis appointed him a page in the House of Representatives in Washington. While serving as a page, he attended George Washington University at night and received his MD degree. He entered the medical corps of the U. S. Army prior to World War I and served with General Pershing in France. Remaining in the army medical corps, he served in many posts throughout the United States and in overseas army positions. He was commanding officer of Fitzsimmons, largest Army hospital in the country and in World War II served as executive assistant to the Surgeon General. Later he was made commanding officer of the Santa Fe (New Mexico) General Hospital. He retired to inactive service following his tour of duty at the New Mexico hospital. General McAfee was married to the former Marjorie Dishon, whose father was a high ranking officer in the Medical Corps. Following her death, his sister, Miss Jessie McAfee went to live with him and served as his official hostess and looked after the two McAfee children, George and Marjorie. The sister, Miss Jessie, survives With the two children, Dr. George of Cincinnati and Miss Marjorie at home. The late Mrs. Jack Cartwright was a sister of General McAfee. Funeral rites were conducted in Denver and then the body was taken to Arlington National Cemetery where military rites were scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
