Edward Brennan - Class Of 1903

Edward P. Brennan, 67, well known former resident of Delphi and the first budget director of the State of Indiana, died Friday night in Veterans’ hospital Marion. Mr. Brennan had been ill for more than 2 years with heart disease. Born in Kansas, he came here as a youth to make his home with his aunt, Anna Hoan, and resided with her on the former’s farm on the Dayton road for many years. He graduated from the LaSalle Extension School, Chicago, as a certified public accountant and later from the Indiana University Law School. In World War I he enlisted in the Secret Service and later was commissioned a lieutenant. Brennan was named budget clerk in 1933 by former Governor Paul McNutt and in 1935 was named by McNutt to be the first director of the budget. As budget director, says the Indianapolis Star, he kept a close eye on governmental spending and was known as one of the foremost authorities in Indiana on state finance. He was appointed chief examiner of the State Board of Accounts by Governor M. Clifford Townsend and held the position until 1941. Brennan was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, the Indianapolis Press Club and Indianapolis Elks. Funeral rites were held Tuesday morning, from SS Peter and Paul Cathedral, Indianapolis, with burial in Holy Cross cemetery.
