Riley Mullendore - Class Of 1903

Riley Mullendore, 50, former Delphi high school student, central figure in a sensational murder case that was tried in Lafayette and Delphi 22 years ago, met death in Memphis, Tenn., Saturday, as he was walking across the street when he was struck by a recklessly driven automobile operated by W. O. Wilhoyt, who was taken into custody. Mullendore, 28 years old at the time, shot and killed Grover Cleveland Cook, a Kentuckian, at the Mullendore farm, just over the county line in Tippecanoe county, in 1914. He pleaded self- defense and said Cook, who was a hand at the farm, had been having improper relations with women members of the family. The jury disagreed in the Lafayette trial and the case came to Delphi on a change of venue. Mullendore was finally acquitted here and a court room filled to capacity went wild with joy as the jury announced its verdict after being out only a short period of time. He went south several years ago. The body was taken to Logansport, where the funeral was held at 1:30 p. m. Tuesday at the McCloskey funeral home with the Rev. W. E. Carroll officiating. Burial was made at Rockfield where his parents are buried. Surviving are a brother, Ferris Mullendore, of Logansport, and a sister, Mrs. Roy Towsley, of Detroit, formerly Miss Zelda Mullendore of Delphi. Riley Mullendore spent the past summer in Rock Creek township visiting Mr. and Mrs. Thurlow Mullendore. He was the eldest son of the late Jacob and Susan Shaffer Mullendore and was born on April 13. 1886. Ferris Mullendore, a brother of Riley, is recovering from an operation which he recently underwent in an Indianapolis hospital.
