Earl Thompson - Class Of 1903

Earl E. Thompson, 73, who for the past 22 years has served as assessor of Carroll county, died at the family home on East Franklin Street Tuesday morning. Mr. Thompson suffered a heart attack and an ambulance was summoned to take him to the hospital but he died before the ambulance reached the scene. Although in failing health for a number of years, Mr. Thompson’s sudden death was a shock to the many friends in the entire county. First elected as county assessor on the Republican ticket in 1934, Mr. Thompson had been successful in being re-elected five succeeding terms. Previously, he had been engaged in the woodworking business in Delphi with Caesar Margowski and the late Kennard Stewart. Born near Delphi, March 13, 1883, he was the son of Hiram and Ora (Whistler) Thompson, descendants of pioneer settlers of the county. He was a member of the official board of the Methodist church; a member of the IOOF, Rebekah and Masonic lodge. Surviving are his widow, Marie Wall Thompson; a daughter, Mrs. John (Thelma) H. Hamling of Delphi; three sisters, Mrs. Jessie Drake of Port Clinton, Washington; Nola Harmon of Monticello; Carrie Snoeberger of route 4, Delphi; and a brother, Arthur Thompson of Logansport; a granddaughter, Mrs. Harry Shaffer, Jr., of Flora, rural route. Two sisters preceded in death. Funeral rites will be conducted at 3 p. m. today (Thursday) from the Eikenberry funeral home in Delphi with Rev. Forest Howell and Rev. A. P. Manker officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic cemetery. Graveside Masonic rites will be held.
