Lou Speece (Blanchard) - Class Of 1879

Mrs. Lou Speece Blanchard, widow of Harry Blanchard, passed away at her home in Tippecanoe township Tuesday night, at the advanced age of ninety-two years. In her passing, Carroll county loses one of its oldest citizens, and one most beloved. She was born and reared here. Her sorrows and her joys have centered in her home. She loved her church and in her younger days was a member of the Methodist church choir. The older members, who were young then, recall Mrs. Blanchard and Mrs. Higginbotham, choir members, as beautiful young matrons in face and character. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Blanchard: Wilbur, who resides in Michigan City; Josephine, who is a trained nurse and has been her mother's constant companion for many years, and Jennie, who served with the Red Cross overseas in World War I and died at the home of her mother and sister. Mr. Blanchard, son of a pioneer physician. Dr. James R. Blanchard, died in April 1930. Mrs. Blanchard has lived in the home atop the Carrollton hill for fifty years. The land on which the house stands was inherited by her grandfather and grandmother Speece in the early 1800's. Her great grandfather Ludwig Speece came to this country from Germany in 1754. Mrs. Blanchard leaves her two children, Wilbur and Josephine; three granddaughters and three great-grandsons. A lovely lady has passed on in gentleness, in courtesy and in character. She has had devoted care from her children, and her neighbors and friends have given to her the contacts she loved, since her frailty has kept her within her home. Friends may call at the Eikenberry funeral home after noon Thursday Funeral rites will be conducted Friday afternoon, at 2 p.m. from the funeral home with Rev. Frank Briggs officiating. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
