In Memory

Jessie Cartwright (Smith) - Class Of 1881

A double grave in Masonic cemetery, made as the sun was sinking in the west Tuesday evening, will tell a sad story for many years to come, marking, as it does, the last resting place of a young mother and her infant babe. There Jessie Cartwright Smith lies buried by the side of an infant daughter that hope had pictured as the joy, pride and light of a happy home. Mrs. Jessie Cartwright Smith was twenty-eight years of age, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John A Cartwright. She was born in Delphi and here she grew to womanhood. In June, 1887, she was married to Dr. W. Smith. None save those who were welcomed frequently into their home know how bright and happy it was, or how beautiful a picture was destroyed when death laid its hand upon the young wife who presided over this home. The sorrow of husband, parents and sisters is too sacred for many words from us, but theirs is the consolation that come from the knowledge that an entire community, recalling the sweet graces of girlhood and the charming trait of womanhood that marked the life of the one who has been stricken down, bends its head with them and pays the tender tribute that by sympathy alone can extend. Death came as a happy relief from suffering Monday morning at eight o’clock, and the funeral services were conducted from the family resilience Tuesday afternoon, J. A. Maxwell, of the Methodist church, officiating.
