Ron Whiteman - Class Of 1957

Ronald J. "Red" Whiteman, 82, of Lafayette, passed away Saturday-February 12, 2022, at 7:20am, at his home, after a short battle with cancer. He was born February 28, 1939, in Lafayette, to the late Woodrow "Woody" & Clatia Kennard Whiteman. His marriage was to Dorothy J. Soper in Delphi, on August 13, 1964, and she survives. Red was a 1957 graduate of Delphi High School. He spent 4 years in the Indiana National Guard Army. He started working for his father at Whiteman Bro's Inc., in Delphi, in 1946. He continued working at their grain elevator, and became manager in 1983, when his father passed away unexpectedly, and continued on with the business, until he retired in 2004. Red and his wife spent 23 years wintering in Belleview, FL. He was a member of the Delphi United Methodist Church, and later transferred his membership to the Yeoman United Methodist Church. He enjoyed trap shooting, fishing, and mushroom hunting. He always put out a big garden and enjoyed sharing his produce with his family and neighbors and brought garden goodies with him to the elevator to share with his many customers and friends. He enjoyed sprint car racing, NASCAR, and attended several Brick Yard 400 races in Indianapolis. He was a big supporter of Purdue Men's basketball and enjoyed going to their games at Mackey. Red never met a stranger. Always greeted you with a firm handshake and a smile that instantly made you feel welcome. He enjoyed telling stories and was very community minded when it came to Delphi. No matter where he was in the world, traveling with his wife, or on a fishing trip, he always ran into to someone he knew. Family was everything to him, and he dearly loved them all. He enjoyed supporting his grandchildren at their sporting and school functions. Being together at his house for any reason, always brought a big smile to his face. Surviving: wife-Dorothy J. Whiteman of Lafayette; daughter-Becky & Greg Baxter of Delphi; son-Brian & Sherri Whiteman of Lafayette; sister-Deanna Pearson of Delphi; brother-Douglas & Debra Whiteman of Cutler; grandchildren: Sydney & Brandon Farrar, Morgan & Tyson Ovalle, Brett Whiteman, Kameron Baxter, Jenise Sterrett & Ethan Brooke, Brandi & Anthony Arnett, Kaiden Baxter, & Koby Baxter. 8 great grandchildren survive.
