Catherine McCain

Catherine McCain, 71, 1207 Wayne Terrace, Lafayette, died Mon, June 5, 1978, at 11:15 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Hospital where she had been a patient one day after suffering a stroke at her river cottage near Delphi.
  Born July 27, 1906, at Delphi, she was the daughter of Luther R. and Helen Harley McCain. A 1925 graduate of Delphi High School, she attended DePauw University and graduated from Indianapolis Teachers College (Blakers).  She received a bachelor's degree from Butler University and master's from Purdue.
  She began her teaching career at White Oak School in White County, taught elementary grades at Delphi for 17 years and in the Lafayette elementary grades from 1945 until her retirement in 1974.  Her teaching career spanned 47 years.
  She was initiated into Pi Kappa Sigma, professional-social sorority which merged with Sigma Kappa Sorority, Sigma Kappa.  She also served as advisor to the Purdue University Chapter of Sigma Kappa and was president of the Sorority Corporation Boars; Lafayette City and State Panellenic Councils; Greater Lafayette Assoc. for Childhood Education; Elementary Division, Indiana State Teachers Assoc.; Lafayette Education Association; Council of Exceptional Children.
 She was a member of Tri Kappa Sorority; Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary; Delphi Presbyterian Church, where she was a Sunday School Teacher many years; and Lafayette Council of International Reading Assoc., which named her "outstanding reading teacher" in 1974.
  She was honored by Beta Sigma Phi Sorority as "Woman of the Year" in May of this year and recently was honored by Mayor James Riehle as Distinguished Citizen of Lafayette.
  Survivors include two brothers, Robert H. McCain of Monticello, and Thomas C. McCain of Delphi; three nephews, Douglas C. McCain, T. Daniel McCain and David R. McCain; one foster nephew, James French.
 Servies will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Thompson Funeral Home, Delphi with the Rev. Douglas Tracy.  Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.  Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today, Wednesday.
