Betty Hazlett (Smith) - Class Of 1945

Betty Lou Hazlett Smith, 75, of 430 N. Main St., Monticello, died at 9:02 a m. Sept. 21, 2002 in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette. She was injured in a car-pedestrian accident on Friday in Monticello. Born June 13, 1927, in Marshall, she was the daughter of Ewing Glenn and Dorthea Hemming Hazlett. She married David Richard Smith in Carroll County on May 5, 1946, and he died May 10, 1960. She was a 1945 graduate of Delphi High School. Mrs. Smith worked for several area newspapers, doing court reporting. She also worked for several years for Council on Aging District 4 Green Thumb Program, and for several Monticello retail businesses. Mrs. Smith formerly attended Hickory Grove United Church of Christ and more recently attended the Monticello United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Auxiliary of the Monticello Moose Lodge. Her hobbies were writing poetry and going to garage sales. Surviving are two sons, Darcell Smith of Monticello, and Derek Smith of Hudson, Fla.; a daughter, Leveda Smith of Denver, Colo.; four sisters, Carolyn Mallory of Fair Oak, Calif., Marilyn Rupert of Lubbock, Texas, Sharon Smith of Pensacola, Fla., and Gretchen Self of Carmichael, Calif.; a brother Bill Hazlett of Austin, Texas; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, David Glenn Smith. Services will be today (Wednesday) at 10 a.m. at Abbott Funeral Home in Delphi, with Rev. Ed Selvidge officiating. Burial will be at Hickory Grove Cemetery.
