In Memory

Don Wesner

Donald E. Wesner, 77, of Delphi, died Fri-Sept 13, 2013 at 8:10am, at St. Elizabeth Healthcare Center-Delphi, after a brief illness. He was born Nov. 11, 1935 in Carthage, MO, to the late Stacy & Ethel Newsom Wesner. His marriage was to Mary E. Shierling in Saratoga, IN, on Mar 18, 1967, and she survives. He graduated from Carmel High School in 1953; received his B.S. from Whittier College, Whittier, CA, in 1958; received his M.S. in music education from Ball State University in 1965. Don taught music, and was the choir director for the Delphi Community Middle School for 32 years, retiring in 1995. He was a member of the Delphi United Methodist Church since 1971, and was the choir director there for 29 years, before retiring several years ago. He and his wife attended the Wesley Wed Sunday school class. He worked at Camp Tecumseh during his summer break from teaching, and after he retired from teaching, for over 20 years, cooking up "Don's pancakes," and also sang "The Lord's Prayer" at the final campfire on Friday, every week, during camp season. He loved that job dearly. He sang with the Bach Chorale Singers for 25 years, a singing organization in Lafayette, where he was fortunate to share his love for music with a trip to sing in Europe one summer, along with their scheduled concerts in Lafayette, and was a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity. Don was a strong leader in his community, a lover of all music, enjoyed cooking, woodworking, and being a loving husband and father, grandfather, brother, and friend to so many people. We love, and will miss you dearly. He is survived by his loving wife-Mary E. Wesner of Delphi; daughters-Leigh Anne Knight and Cheryl Sears (husband Chip) both of Nashville, TN; sisters-Muriel Edgerton of Gwyned Valley, PA, Mildred Adams of Carmel, Dortha Meredith of Richmond; a brother-Ronald Wesner of Portland, OR. Grandsons: Jakob & Gavin Knight. Services: A memorial service will be held, and announced, at a later date, at the Delphi United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions are strongly encouraged by the family to the Delphi UMC for camp scholarships, or to Camp Tecumseh for scholarships to attend camp. Abbott Funeral Home, Delphi, in charge of arrangements. Online condolences: abbottfuneralhome@frontier.com
