C. Wayne Eikenberry

C. Wayne Eikenberry, 72, former superintendent of the Delphi School Corporation, died at 5:25 a.m. Saturday in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Lafayette, apparently of a heart attack. He was born in Sullivan, Ill., May 18, 1907, the son of Oren and Grace Eikenberry. He was married in North Manchester, Dec. 24, 1933, to Ruby P. Stone, who survives. He was a 1926 graduate of Bringhurst High School and a 1930 graduate of Manchester College. He taught school at Bourbon and had served as principal at Etna Green High School, Madison Township School and Hebron High School From 1944 to 1949 he was principal at Delphi High School and from 1949 to 1954 he served as Delphi’s superintendent. He then went to Muckegon, Mich., and was superintendent there. He served as assistant superintendent of the Davenport, Iowa, schools for one year before returning to Delphi in 1958 as superintendent of the local schools. He retired Jan. 1, 1966. Eikenberry served as educational consultant for the Encyclopedia Britannica and was a member of Indiana State Department of Education Board. He was a member of Carroll County Assessors Review Board for three years and was a volunteer at St. Elizabeth Hospital several years. He was a member of the Lafayette Torch Club and a former member of the Lions Club, Rotary Club and Masonic Lodge. Surviving with the wife are two sons, Neal S. Eikenberry of Merrillville and Dale W. Eikenberry of Indianapolis; one daughter, Leanna K. Eikenberry of Washington, D C.; three brothers, Robert Eikenberry of Kokomo, Dean Eikenberry of Indianapolis and Merlin Eikenberry of San Diego, Calif.; and two sisters, Mrs. Ray (Marguerite) Swinford of Fort Wayne and Mrs. Daniel (Frances) Caldwell of Camden. A brother preceded him in death. Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Thompson Funeral Home, Delphi, with the Rev. John Laprad officiating. Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery.
