Lorena Whitehead

Lorena Claire Whitehead, 87, rural Kokomo, died at 6:57 a.m. Feb. 12, 1990, in St. Joseph Hospital, Kokomo. Born Dec. 25, 1902, in Kokomo, she was a daughter of Henry and Matilda Bulk Obermeyer. She was married Nov. 1, 1931, to George Lee Whitehead, who survives. Mrs. Whitehead was a teacher for 49 years and had taught at Camden, Delphi, Kokomo, Northwestern, and Windfall high schools until retiring in 1970. She received her bachelor’s degree from Valpariaso University in 1928 and her master’s degree from Butler University in 1953. A charter member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, she had been active in women’s groups of the church, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. Surviving with the husband are a son, Robert Whitehead of Kokomo; two daughters, Emily Curry of Kokomo and Kathryn Clark of Kansas City, Mo.; a sister, Florence Crouch of Kokomo; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. John’s Lutheran Church with burial in Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. today at Ellers Mortuary and one hour before services at the church.
