Mabel Downham (Shockley) - Class Of 1936

Mabel I. Downam Shockley, 80, of Delphi, died at 12:07 a.m. Feb. 7, 1999, at St. Elizabeth Healthcare Center, Delphi, where she had been a patient since August 1998. She had been in failing health the last two years. Born Dec. 16, 1918, in Yeoman, she was the daughter of Jappie and Frances E. Simons Downam. She married Raymond C. Shockley on Aug. 18, 1934, in Delphi. He died Jan. 18, 1986. She worked 15 years as a custodian at the Delphi Middle School, retiring in 1984. Mrs. Shockley attended school in Delphi and was a member of the Pittsburg Southern Missionary Baptist Church. She enjoyed reading and gardening. Surviving are three sons, William “Bill” Shockley of Logansport, Raymond H. Shockley of Kokomo, and Michael A. Shockley of Delphi; four daughters, Sylvia Rude of Russiaville, and Janet Gamer, Mary Arion, and Frances Johnson, all of Delphi; three sisters, Kathryn Gunn of Van Buren, Lottie Walters of Morgantown, and Dorothy Johnson of Delphi; 21 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, twin sons, six brothers, one sister, one grandchild, and two great-grandchildren. Services were Tuesday at Abbott Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Ellcessor officiating. Burial was in Hickory Grove Cemetery.
