Abner Bowen - Class Of 1916

al rites for Abner H. Bowen, 60, prominent Carroll County resident, were held on Monday, at 2:30 p.m. at the Delphi Presbyterian Church with Rev. James Rankin officiating. The body lay in state in the church from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. preceding the services. Burial was made in the Masonic cemetery. His death occurred at 7:45 p.m. on Friday at the Home hospital in Lafayette where he had been a patient since Wednesday. Born in Delphi on July 10, 1898, he was the son of Edward Wright and Della (Gregg) Bowen. His marriage on October 7, 1923, was to Willa Reid, at Springfield. The widow survives. Mr. Bowen attended the Delphi High School and preparatory school at Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. He was a veteran of World War I, serving in the 130th Field Artillery, He was stationed in France during the time of his military service. Upon his return to the United States following the close of the war he enrolled in the University of Illinois. His college affiliations included the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and the Skull and Cap honorary society. His business interests included the management of extensive farm lands in both Carroll County and Missouri and the ownership of a loan and insurance company, in Delphi. Mr. Bowen claimed membership in the Masonic Blue Lodge, the Delphi Commandery, the Shrine at Indianapolis, the American Legion Post 75, the Lafayette Country Club and the Country Club at Delphi, of which of was a charter member He was captain and commander in the Civil Air patrol, of the Lafayette district. Mr. Bowen had served on the advisory board of the T.C.A, at Washington, DC., assisting with part 4. He was a member of the Delphi Zoning Board and the president of the Junto Club. A construction engineer, he helped build the Oakdale Dam, at Lake Freeman. In addition to the wife, the survivors Include three daughters, Mrs. Howard Cageman, of Chesterton, Mrs. James Stokes, of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Donald Longwith, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; his mother; a sister, Miss Hilda Bowen, both of Delphi; a brother Charles E. of Champaign Ill., and three grandchildren.
