Kenneth Scowden - Class Of 1944

Kenneth "Pete” Scowden, 75, of Buck Creek, died at 10:50 a.m. March 19, 2001, at his residence. Born Nov. 30, 1925, in Americus, he was the son of Noah C. and Bernice Leffler Scowden. He married Maxine Pearson on Aug. 17, 1952, in Delphi, and she survives. He worked for Jewel Foods in Lafayette for 30 years as produce manager, retiring in 1985. He also drove cars for the Auto Auction for 10 years. Mr. Scowden attended Delphi High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1944 to 1946, stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He was a member of the Living Faith Church of the Brethren in Flora, Lafayette Moose Lodge, Delphi VFW 9383, and Delphi American Legion Post 75. He was an avid euchre player and enjoyed mushroom hunting and Purdue men’s sports. Also surviving are one daughter, Cindy Morgason of Cincinnati, Ohio; two brothers, Robert "Bob” Scowden of Monticello, and Richard “Rick” Scowden of West Lafayette; five sisters, Irma Sprunger of Punta Gorda, Fla., Dorothy "Dot” McCormick of Delphi, Velma Davis of Deerfield Beach, Fla., Helen Michael of Logansport, and Katherine “Kit” Rehwald of Pompano Beach, Fla.; and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, an infant son, two brothers, and one sister. Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Abbott Funeral Home with Pastor Todd Wenger officiating. Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in IOOF Memorial Gardens, Pittsburg, with Delphi American Legion military rites. Memorials may be made to Riley Children’s Hospital or the Living Faith Church building fund.
