David A. Young, 80, passed away on Saturday, November 30, 2024 at The Springs in Lafayette.

David was born August 20, 1944 in Lafayette to the late Herbert and Florence (Mills) Young. His marriage was to Helen Sims on February 21, 1964 in Delphi. She preceded him in death on October 21, 2022. David was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and was a long-time educator and coach in the Lafayette area. He started his career teaching and coaching at Delphi High School. He was head boys’ basketball coach at Harrison and North Montogomery High Schools for many years. Later in his career, he served as assistant coach at West Lafayette. In addition, he served as President of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association. Outside coaching and teaching, his passion was for his family and grandchildren. David had a tremendous green thumb and loved his flowers. He touched many lives and will be deeply missed.

David is survived by his children, Doug (Barb) Young of Indianapolis, Kimberly (Jeffrey) Stouder of Lafayette, Melissa Sondgerath of Lafayette, and Jessica (Ty) Rios of Lafayette; sister, Kathy Griner of Florida; Eleven grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Stephanie Young; and a grandson, Joshua Jackson.

Visitation will take place from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Thursday, December 5, 2024 at Hippensteel funeral Home in Lafayette. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:30 AM Friday, December 6, 2024 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in West Lafayette. Fr. Daniel Shine and Fr. Ted Dudzinski will co-celebrate. Rite of Interment will follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Blessed Sacrament Christmas Jubilee.
