Barb George (McCain)

Barbara Jo (George) McCain, 71, went to be with her lord and savior on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2022. Barbara Jo was born on July 29, 1951, to Curtis and Dorothy (Caldwell) George in Logansport, Ind. On Aug. 11, 1973, she married Donald Dean McCain at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Camden, Ind.; he preceded her in death. For the last three years she has resided at St. Elizabeth Healthcare Assisted Living in Delphi, Ind. Prior to that, she was a lifelong resident of Camden. Barbara Jo served as the elementary art instructor at Camden Elementary, Hillcrest and Delphi Elementary for the Delphi Community School Corporation for 34 years, beginning in 1978. Prior to her employment at DCSC she was an art educator for the West Lafayette Community School Corporation and Carroll Consolidated School Corporation. She retired from her teaching career in May 2012 after 37 years of service as an arts educator for grades K-5. Barbara Jo was a 1969 graduate of Carroll High School and graduated from Purdue University, achieving her B.A. degree in 1972 and Master’s degree in 1975. Educating children through art expression and community preservation was her passion. The mentorship she received from the late Jack Sanders helped guide and develop her career and life. She wanted children to be able to express themselves and her art class was a safe place to do just that. She believed that her students could achieve the impossible when they were able to release their creativity. Many of her classroom lesson plans incorporated the community, local artists and parents. The Camden-Jackson Township Public Library reading room addition is an excellent example. Barbara Jo was so proud of her hometown of Camden. She was once described as a community treasure; once you find one, you don’t want to lose it. The impact that she had on former students, colleagues, community members and her family is invaluable to those who knew and loved her. She will be greatly missed for her enthusiasm, attention to details, work ethic, respect, leadership, and unconditional love. Barbara Jo is survived by one son, Kyle McCain (Robyn); one daughter, Audrey McCain (fiancé Stephen Meriwether); and one granddaughter, Madilynn Mae McCain. Also surviving are one brother, Pat George (Beth); one sister, Jane Ann Dimitt; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Joe and Paula McCain; sister-in-law, Marilyn Nance; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and many, many cousins. Viewing will be Saturday, Sept. 10, from 2-6 p.m. and one hour prior to the funeral service on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m. Both the viewing and funeral service will be held at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 282 W. Cumberland St., Camden, Ind. (46917).
