Bob Tyner

DELPHI -- Robert D. "Bob" Tyner, 70, of 616 S. Prince William Road, died at 8:58 a.m. Thursday, March 3, 2011, at St. Elizabeth Central hospital in Lafayette. He had battled cancer since December and had been hospitalized since Feb. 22.

He was born Nov. 24, 1940, in Francisville and was the son of the late Milton and Louellen Myres Tyner. He graduated from Monon High School in 1959, received his Bachelor of Science in education from Indiana State University in 1963, his Master of Arts in education from ISU in 1967, and did graduate work in computer science at Purdue University.

His marriage was to Christina K. "Tina" Wray in Delphi on March 31, 1962, and she survives.

Mr. Tyner was a math and computer science teacher at Delphi Community School Corp. for 37 years, retiring in 2000. He was a part-time clerk for the Delphi Post Office, taught math at Ivy Tech-Lafayette for three years, managed the Carroll County Country Club golf course for seven years and was part owner of the former Shiloh Drive-In in Delphi. For many years during his summer breaks from teaching, he and a friend did outside painting in the Delphi community.

He was a member of the Delphi United Methodist Church, Indiana State Teachers, Retired Teachers and National Teachers associations, an Eagle Scout, a charter member and past president of the former Delphi Jaycee, a JCI Senator on the National Jaycee level, a member of Delphi Lions Club and a past president, a member of the Carroll County Country Club for 35 years, and an avid golfer.

Mr. Tyner coached the Delphi Community Girls Golf Team for 11 years, was a little league baseball coach for 10 years and was the chairman of the Delphi Community School Academic Decathlon Team for 10 years. He enjoyed trips to Wisconsin mushroom hunting, vegetable gardening, horseshoes, wintering in Gulf Shores, Ala., for the past 10 years, walking at the Wabash & Erie Canal, Purdue University athletics, Chicago Cubs baseball, and Indianapolis Colts.

Surviving with his wife are four sons, Andrew Tyner (wife: Melody) of Monticello, Adam W. Tyner and Aaron R. Tyner, both of Delphi, and Ashley Tyner (wife: Christine) of Flora; a brother, Ronald Tyner (wife: Aleta) of Brazil, Ind.

Also survivingare his mother-in-law, Dorothy Wray of Delphi; brother-in-law, Scott Wray (wife: Tami) of York, S.C.; 6 grandchildren, Blaine Tyner, Brynn Tyner, Aaron Tatman, Cami Busch, Kaira Ragan, and Kaitlin Ragan. Preceded in death by a brother, Jim; father-in-law, Dick Wray. He dearly loved his family, was a dedicated husband, father, and loved all of his grandchildren, and his extended family.

Friends may call Sunday 2-7 p.m. at Abbott Funeral Home, Delphi. Service Monday at 11 a.m., Delphi United Methodist Church, the Rev. Todd Ladd officiating. Burial at Masonic Cemetery, Delphi. How sad, he was a great teacher he will be so missed by his family, friends and his community. R.I.P. Mr Tyner.

I remember you in Math class and you where good at it cause I hated Math and you said I was good at it if I just put my mind to it. Well, I went to School of Accounting so I guess you where right hahaha, but I remember you had your PERSUADER, the one with the holes in it you had got in collage hahahaha and thought you would bring it to work with you JUST IN CASE! I remeber you telling us of your collage years and I thought that was facinating. Well, Mr Tyner, you take care and know that you are TRUELY missed by MANY!!!!! and GOD BLESS you! your Student Kenny Dewit
