John Wilcox

  John A. Wilcox, 65, of Lafayette, died at 6 a.m. Oct. 20, 1989, at his residence.  He had been in failing health the past year.
  Born June 21, 1924, in Putnam County, he was the son of Charley and Cora Hinote Wilcox.  His marriage was Feb. 26,1943, in Plainfield, to Estherine Plummer, who survives.
  He retired in June 1989 from Delphi Community High School as head of the mathematics department.  He taught at Delphi 32 years.  He also had taught high school math and was basketball coach at Freeland Park in Benton County, Buck Creek High School, and Akron High School in Fulton County.
  A 1942 graduate of Plainfield High School, he received master's degrees from Indiana State University and Purdue University.
  He was in the Marine Corps suring World War II, and served in the South Pacific during the occupation of Japan.
  He was a member of Colburn United Methodist Church; Indiana State Teachers Association; National Education Association; Classroom Teachers Association of Delphi; and Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
  Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Linda Kay Brachney of Porter; one son, John Steven Wilcox of Corona, Calif.; two brothers, Charley Wilcox of Seattle, Wash., and Fred Wilcox of Plainfield; one sister, Barbara Gatfield of Port Orange, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
  Services were Monday at Horn Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Ashley and Rev. John Kirkpatrick officiating.  Burial was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette.
  Memorial contributions may be sent to the Colburn United Methodist Church or the Carroll County Cancer Association.

He who knows how will always find work, He who knows why will be bossing the jerk! You taught me that Mr. Wilcox. I have used it all my life. Rest in Peace.

Mr. Wilcox was a great teacher. Definitely "old school". You earned what you got or didn't get...hahaha. I remember that he always had a bunch of pens in his pocket protector, but I don't remember him ever using one from there. Why do I remember such things??
